Transforming Lives and Landscapes in Ethiopia's Highlands

by Kim Krey, on Mar 20, 2024

In the heart of northern Ethiopia's rough highlands, a big change is underway. The EthioTrees project, which we are happy to support, is leading the way for the environment and local communities. It is a leading climate change initiative that not only promotes ecological restoration, but also strengthens the socio-economic structure of the Tigray region. Working with the experienced experts at myclimate, a non-profit climate organisation, we are setting a new standard for sustainable development and climate resilience.

Socioeconomic Revival through Nature

For too long, the smallholders and landless farmers of Tigray have faced the harsh realities of environmental changes. EthioTrees is flipping this narrative by offering sustainable livelihood opportunities that harmonise with the environment. Instead of relying on the extraction of wood products, the community is turning to the sale of honey and frankincense. This not only provides a stable income for families, but also encourages a culture of conservation and sustainable land use, significantly reducing the workload for women.

Imagine the difference it makes when a farmer in a remote village finds empowerment in eco-friendly practices. This is not just about making ends meet; it's about crafting a sustainable future for generations to come. The project exemplifies how environmental restoration can go hand in hand with economic prosperity, creating a blueprint for communities worldwide.

Double Impact: Biodiversity and Environmental Resilience

The ecological achievements of the project are nothing short of remarkable. By focusing on the restoration of heavily degraded slopes, the initiative is breathing life back into the landscape. This isn't just about planting trees; it's about reversing historical impacts on ecosystems and rekindling the diverse relationships between animals and their habitats. The results? A significant increase in above-ground vegetation, biodiversity, and groundwater availability, coupled with carbon removal from the atmosphere and storage in the soil.

This holistic approach to climate protection, underpinned by the high-quality standards of the Plan Vivo certification, ensures the sustainability of the project. It is proof of what can be achieved when communities, experts, and organisations like refurbed and myclimate join forces for the greater good.

A Model for the Future

The EthioTrees project is more than just a local initiative; it's a model for global climate action. By showcasing the tangible benefits of landscape restoration, from socioeconomic upliftment to ecological revival, the project offers a hopeful glimpse into a sustainable future. It proves that even the most degraded landscapes can be revitalised, that communities can thrive alongside nature, and that every one of us has a role to play in protecting our planet.

The message is clear: sustainable living and environmental protection are not only possible, but also worthwhile. By supporting effective climate protection projects, whether through lobbying, donations or simply by spreading information, we can all contribute to a greener, more sustainable world. At refurbed, we work with trusted partners to contribute to effective climate protection.

Together with myclimate, we support a project that not only contributes to landscape restoration, but also to the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This commitment to holistic climate protection is an integral part of myclimate's work. We are therefore delighted about this sustainable partnership, which enables us to take a remarkable path towards a greener future - together with you.

We are convinced of this. Are you too?
